What to expect during your visit
When you arrive to the clinic, plan to stay for approximately 3 hours. The 3 hours are spent in taking a medical history, information session, lab work, and an ultrasound (sonogram). This time also includes the procedure and recovery period. The procedure is performed by qualified medical doctors under local and IV sedation, anesthesia.
Detailed overview of your visit
- Our clinic receptionist will cordially greet you and ask you to fill out a medical history form. Feel free to ask for assistance including answers to any general questions you may have.
- A nurse or counsellor will then escort you to a private room where she will explain the procedure and discuss all your concerns. The nurse will prepare you for the procedure by having your blood pressure checked and your blood tested.
- You will then proceed to the change area, where you will change into an examination gown, and be seated in the pre-operating waiting room.
- A nurse will take you to the operating room where an ultrasound, using a state-of-the-art computerized sonogram will be performed to determine the length of your pregnancy. You will also be given analgesic and conscious sedation medication (painkillers) to help keep discomfort of the procedure to a minimum.
- You will not be put to sleep.
- The doctor will perform the manual examination, give you a local anesthetic, and complete the procedure. The entire procedure usually takes from 3 to 8 minutes.
- After the procedure you will rest in the recovery room for up to 30 minutes. You will be offered a refreshing drink and a light snack.
- When you are comfortable and ready to leave, you will be sent home with all the necessary information about post-operative care.
Preparing for your visit
- Patient must not have anything to eat for 4 hours prior to the appointment.
- Patient must not have anything to drink for 2 hours prior to the appointment.
- Patient should not drive for 12 hours after the appointment.
- Patient must abstain from alcohol or street drugs for 48-hr prior to the procedure.
- Patients are not allowed to bring their companions with them into the waiting area.
- Please arrange for the children to be left at home.
- Positive I.D. is required for health insurance.
